Review: The Gamble Brothers Series, Books 1 and 2

First off, let me just get this out of the way... I freaking love J. Lynn/Jennifer L. Armentrout's Gamble brothers!!! I've read these two books at least three times now and I am planning to read it again if I find myself looking for something to make my heart go thump-thump-thump. Ha-ha!

I am making a two-book review here. I am still awaiting the release of the third and last Gamble brother book so here goes...

The first book in the 3-book series is Tempting the Best Man. It is the story of Chase Gamble and Madison Daniels. Here is the blurb from Goodreads...

She'll make him lose control...

Madison Daniels has worshipped her brother's best friend since they were kids. Everyone thinks she and Chase Gamble would make the perfect couple, but there are two major flaws in their logic. 1) Chase has sworn off relationships of any kind, and 2) after blurring the line between friends and lovers for one night four years ago, they can't stop bickering.

I super love this book!!! I love how Chase kept fighting off his attraction towards Maddie but he would always end up near her, yearning for her in more ways than one. I also love how the two finally came together inside that cornballs love shack from hell. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Then there's the second book which is Tempting the Player. I loved Chase and Maddie's story but this second book is by far my favorite! I fell in love with Chad Gamble and Bridget Rogers! Goodreads has this about the book...

A kilig-fest, I tell you! I felt as if I am Bridget while reading this story. It made me feel like I am living in her shoes and wanting Chad, feeling it in the deepest recesses of my soul! Ha! Ha! Ha! I was laughing while I read this story, and I cried a little, too, on that part during Christmas Eve. And I think I swooned upon reading Chad's proposal! It's so freaking sweet!!!

If you want books you can read again and again, especially when you are feeling down and out and in need of some hope, love, and cheering up, The Gamble Brothers Series are the books you need to have on your shelf! Make sure you have it!

I really can't wait for Chandler Gamble's story to come out! According to Goodreads, Tempting the Bodyguard will be published this coming May.

Review: Fifty Shades Series

I have read the Fifty Shades Series - Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed - by E L James a long time ago, way before the hype started. I heard about it from a book blogger and I got intrigued with all the gushing so I bought the first book at a local bookstore and, well, I fell in love with Christian Grey.

In a nutshell, the Fifty Shades Series revolves around the story of Christian Grey, filthy rich entrepreneur bachelor who has an eccentric taste in the bedroom, who fell in love with the lovely Literature student Anastasia Steele. Hooked on her, he asked her to become his girlfriend, making sure that she understands his terms when it comes to his erotic taste in sex. They overcame a lot of obstacles in their relationship, including Christian's inner demons, and ended up getting married. Compromise is a big word in how everything became fine in their world.

You know, I kept on reading and hearing about how bad the writing of this series by E L James. I know for a fact that this is fan fiction, a story created out of E L's love for Twilight. And even though this series is tagged as an erotic novel, it is tame and timid compared to other truly erotic and raunchy novels out there. I find this series to be 50-50 when it comes to eroticism. It is sensual, yes, and a bit of a shocker in some instances. Let me use as an example the shower scene wherein Christian took out Anastasia's tampon so they can have sex. That's the first time I read a scene like that! Ha-ha!

Corny in some instances. Trying hard to become a great novel, yes. But you know what? I enjoyed every bit of the three books! I had fun reading this series! It doesn't matter if most people who read it find it too shallow. What's important is that the overall story is one that captivated so many readers' attention. Yes, it is the typical rich sophisticated guy falling for the damsel in distress kind of girl plot. The guy is head over heels in love with the girl and he is one very possessive guy who will move heaven and earth just to make her happy. The girl is also head over heels in love with the guy who will do whatever he wants just to please him and make him happy. Typical love story with lots of not-too-explicit sex.

I love the first two books a lot! The last one is so-so because I find it was written haphazardly. But again, I love the series all in all!

Review: Through to You

I remember clearly how I kept looking for this book I saw in Goodreads recommendation. I checked with two big local bookstores but both didn't have it in their stocks. So what I did I got an ebook copy of this book that got me so intrigued by the blurb I found in Goodreads...

Do you know the idea of a parallel world, where a world similar to ours is co-existing with us? I've been fascinated by that concept since I was a kid! I believe that there is a world out there with people just like us and we are only separated by a plane.

The very reason why I was intrigued by Through to You by Emily Hainsworth is the concept of a parallel world. So you can say that I have very high expectations with this book.

Let me say first that I enjoyed reading the book. I couldn't put it down! I wanted to know why the parallel worlds of Camden and Nina suddenly opened up to let them in each other's worlds. I also wanted to know what the greenish glow that opens up both their worlds could do to resolve their issues.

Unfortunately, the author, this novel being her first, failed to communicate that very reason. I was waiting for a closure of some kind but there was none. It would have been nice for the story to have had an ending of some kind. Maybe, not the happy ever after we are all used to. But something that would have resolved the issues between Camden, Viv, and Nina. And that greenish glow separating the parallel worlds.

Two more chapters would have been nice :)

All in all, this is one enjoyable book if you don't have anything captivating to read at the moment.

Review: Hearts in Darkness

I am on a good-novel-reading streak! Yes!

So I started reading Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye around 11 in the evening of April 8th and finished it past midnight of April 9th. It was a book you can't put down!

Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye is an AMAZING book!!! A big part of the story took place in the elevator where Makena and Caden explored each other through words and touch. I just love the simplicity of this erotic/romantic story. It simply tells us that there is so much more to falling for another person than mere looks. There should be a meeting of the minds. Chemistry is also very important as well as openness towards each other.

AND a person's outer appearance is very much different from who he/she is inside.

I hope there will be a book two of this story. But just the same, it is one great, swoon-worthy book you can't miss!

Review: Reasonable Doubt

Reasonable Doubt by Whitney G. was the book that made want to read again. If only for that, I am giving this book 5 stars right away! But let me reassure you that this book is really worth your time, if you are into erotic novels, that is.

Just like with The Yearning, I found this book through an Instagram account I am following. Goodreads has this blurb about the book...

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! If I can give Reasonable Doubt by Whitney G more than 5 stars, I would! This is a far, far better version of any and all erotic novels I've read! Miss Whitney G should, no MUST, come up with the next book like RIGHT AWAY!

Sooo good! Effing amazing!!! If you want a well-written erotic novel, this one is for you!

P.S. I was in a reading rut for the past couple of weeks now. Reasonable Doubt helped me get out of that rut! Yes!

Review: The Yearning

The Yearning by Kate Belle is more than just a New Adult novel. It is a book that will leave you looking back on your past and wanting to purge the bad memories in it.

I saw this book in an Instagram account I am following. There was no synopsis included in the post but the cover alone made me curious. I checked in Goodreads and this was what I read that made me read this story...

Life was so much different than when Eve was sixteen, of course. She had a husband and kids to think of. She also needed to make some choices that would change everything she kept in her heart for the past two decades.

The Yearning was one book you wouldn't be able to put down so easily! I read it in just a couple of hours because it was really that good! It was an erotic novel in a way, yes, but there was more to the story than just the sensual relationship between the two main characters.

I Wish They Taught Money in High School

I saw a post in a Facebook group where I belong to regarding this back-to-back book, I Wish They Taught Money in High School. I must admit that the covers alone caught my interest. Cute covers, don't you think? And then I read the title and I immediately thought that the book was definitely for me! Very catchy!

I read the first one, I Wish They Taught Money in High School So I'm Not Dependent on My Paycheck by Clarissa Seriña-de la Paz. Let me tell you first that I was prepared to like the book. I wasn't taught how to handle money back in high school but I knew that we didn't have enough so I learned early on to manage what little school allowance I had. This book tells of the author's experience in handling money and being taught by her parents. It also tells of how the author used Robert Kiyosaki's Cashflow 101. And so much more!

The second one, the other book at the back, I Wish They Taught Money in High School So I Can Start My Own Business Right Away, is, well, all about money and doing/investing in a business.

Let me just say something about the two books. Both authors grew up with privileged lives. They were not typical Filipino kids who struggled with their school allowances and all that. Growing up, they had parents who had enough money to give to them and to teach them how to manage it. They didn't grow up seeing their parents cry over not having enough after paying all the bills. They didn't grow up seeing their parents struggle with paying their tuition fees. I am not saying they grew up with perfect lives. But finance-wise, I don't think they really know the meaning of stretching the last centavo.

This blogger, along with majority of Filipino kids, grew up with almost nothing!

I know that both books are meant to teach us how to become good handlers of money. I like that a lot! Now, I have enough so the book will somehow be able to help me handle my finances better. But majority of Filipinos in this day and age are minimum wage earners. I don't think the book will help them stretch what little cash they have.

Let me focus on one lesson that Ms. de la Paz got from her mother. Always pay your credit card bills in full. That is one very good advice! But let me tell you what reality is. You apply for credit cardS because your paycheck is always not enough! You use your credit card for grocery shopping. You use your credit card to get appliances and furniture for your home in installment basis. You use it to pay for school supplies and other stuff that your kids need. When your credit card bills arrive, you pay whatever amount you can afford above the minimum amount due, and then you wait for bonuses and other work incentives to be credited to your paycheck before you pay for most of your bill. No matter how much the average Filipino worker desire to pay his/her credit card bill in full, when the take home pay is not enough, he/she can't! And that's the reality of it.

I appreciate the efforts both authors put in their books to teach us all about managing our finances. It is great that they want us to increase the value of our net worth. But the sad reality is that, no matter how much you want to invest in stocks, money market instruments, time deposits and such... no matter how much you want to put up your own business, if you don't have enough, you can't. Believe me, I've been there so many times in the past. Even now that I have enough, I have priorities I need to allot cash for before anything else.

Overall, the book is for Filipinos out there who have more than enough to spare after paying their bills. Both books are good but not meant for everybody, in my opinion. It is certainly not for me.

Review: Warm Bodies

Zombie Twilight.

That's what caught my attention when I saw a teaser for Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. Naturally, I was drawn. Hey, I was one of those twihards way before it became a hit!

So my friends and I talked about reading the book then seeing the movie. I saw good reviews of both so I was really excited over this new zombie story. I got an e-book copy and began reading it...

The first few chapters were interesting. I don't know if it's really a fresh take on the zombie classic myth because I've read quite a number of zombie stories and there's always the premise of a cure, of a transformation, a mutation of the plague. Have you read The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan? Or The Passage by Justin Cronin? The same post-apocalyptic age where people mutated into something other than a human. A cure is in the horizon but when it will be discovered it was not discussed in the story.

In Warm Bodies, it was a bit of the same story wherein zombies abound the earth. Within those zombies, a mutation of some kind is also taking place. I won't go into details anymore but suffice it to say that it will keep you reading until the end.

I have mixed reactions toward this book. On one hand, I applaud the fresh idea of a Twilight-like zombie story. On the other hand, I really didn't like the shallowness of the story, leaving me irritated, confused, and wanting more.

If you are looking for a story worth your time, this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a super light read, then go grab this book.

Review: No Time for Goodbye

You wake up.
Your house is empty.
Your family has disappeared...

The lines above written on the cover of the book No Time for Goodbye by Linwood Barclay caught my attention the first time I saw this. Who wouldn't be intrigued by the premise of a family vanishing without a trace? It certainly intrigued me from the get-go.

So I read and, boy, was I in for a ride!

No Time for Goodbye was truly a good read! It was a page turner and it kept me on my toes until the very end. You'd think you already figured it out but after a chapter ends, you realize you're actually wrong! There's some other explanation to what's going on in the story.

Let me just say that I love the fact that the story was told from the point of view of Terry the husband. It made it more suspenseful that way.

I won't spoil the fun for you. I truly recommend this book to those who enjoy the mystery/thriller/crime/suspense genre.

Keeping Her In The Light

Keeping Her In The Light by Nicole Fuentes is a psychological thriller novella written by a 16-year-old Filipino student. It is about a woman named Allie who was kidnapped by a serial killer who suffers from a multiple personality disorder. The kidnapper wants to try out if the Stockholm Syndrome is true and he uses Allie as a subject. Allie had gone through a very tragic experience wherein her parents and younger brother were all shot in front of her before their crazed neighbor shot himself sparing Allie.

The plot was very intriguing so I was lured to buy the book. And boy did I regret it!

This is possibly one of the blah books I've read in my life! It was so annoying! It was too trying hard to be good and by that the author thought putting in big words would make it a great novel. After a few pages I thought of chucking it out the window but I thought might as well give it a chance and finish it. And I did!

The story is about a woman kidnapped by a serial killer. She was used as an experiment of the said killer on Stockholm Syndrome, which is the ability of a captive to feel sympathy for the captor.

I have a beef with the victim in the story. She wasn't exhibiting the normal reactions of a victim. She wasn't afraid. She's too normal for want of a better word. I'll be very detailed about this beef I have with the victim...

1. When she woke up, she was 'supposedly' afraid. She was able to find the switch to the light and saw the gory scene of her captor's earlier killing. She stumbled and all and when she found the door, she went out and found the man who kidnapped her. He was eating, seemingly stoic, raising his brows and not really reacting to her presence.

She was afraid but she was able to process all that. And she sat across the table and talked to him.

From this point on, the story obviously became a haphazard attempt to be an intellectual one. It wasn't.

2. The captor was given his own perspective in the book. Which is very strange, if you ask me. He was given emotions and instead of making the story captivating, the attempt to humanize the captor actually fell flat. He wasn't the normal serial killer. He wasn't deranged. He was actually a very overacting serial killer wannabe!

3. Again, the captive's attention to detail was pretty amazing. I mean she was able to take in the surroundings. She was able to appreciate the beauty of the ballroom and the lounge. She was able to process decisions in her head whether to go to room 1 or 4, to west wing or east, to go up or down. She was able to even talk to herself like she's just deciding whether to get up for work or just stay in bed.

4. She wore high heels! My goodness! How can a captive run when she's wearing high heels for crying out loud! In my experience reading thriller novels, the captive immediately finds a way to free herself of restrictions to freedom. A pair of high heels is clearly a restriction. She took it off for a while but she put it back on. I can only shake my head on that glaring lack of common sense and survival instinct.

5. She would be used by her captor as an experiment on Stockholm Syndrome. But then he told her that. And he wasn't acting like he wanted her to feel sympathy towards him. In fact, he was acting fairly annoying! Which might be the point to the story but then again I didn't get it.

6. I do get it that the kidnapper was suffering from MPD. But, come on! You didn't really get that the person had MPD until the end of the book! And only when the names of the alters were introduced.

This book was trying so hard to become a big psycho thriller but the writer forgot that a really good story doesn't necessarily need highfalutin words to make the story grand. It's in the simplicity of the story, in the character development, in the plot itself. That's what makes a novel really good!

I would have given this book 1 star but opted for 2 for effort.

Flowers in the Attic (Dollanganger #1)

Goodreads described this book as "...the compelling story of a family's betrayal and heartbreak, love and revenge." Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews is more than that. It tells of how a person can be controlled by lust for money. It tells how a person, slave by the pleasures and luxuries of life, can forget those that really matter in her life. Selfishness, betrayal, heartbreak.

It was a case of tender, loving murder.

The four children had perfect lives. They lived in a golden family filled with happiness. But their father dies suddenly, their mother throws themselves on the mercy of her parents - who had disowned her long ago.

Their mother promised they would stay only long enough to inherit the fortune. But gradually she forgot how much she adored her family. Kept hidden in the airless attic, the children now lived alone except for fleeting visits from their mother. Visits that became increasing infrequent... and increasily deadly...

The story was told from the point of view of Catherine Dollanganger. A very effective way of telling the story because if it was told from the point of view of Christopher Dollanganger, I think the emotions would not have come out the same way.

She started telling their story from when they were little kids up to the time they escaped from their "prison".

The story is all about the Dollanganger family. Christopher and Corinne, the parents, and their four kids: Christopher (or Chris from hereon), Catherine (aka Cathy), Carrie and Cory (the twins). When Christopher died due to a vehicular accident, Corinne was left with nothing but her beauty, her penchant for pleasures in life, and her four kids who were totally dependent on her. She begged her parents who disowned her to embraced her back into the family. She was taken back but her kids were brought to the second floor room connected to the attic to hide.

Corinne and Christopher turned out to be very closely related. Christopher was Corinne's half-uncle. Her parents, being fanatical religious people, disowned her when they got married. When Corinne was taken back into her family, she conspired with her mother to hide the kids from her father so that she could work her charm and get her inheritance after all.

She promised her kids that their "imprisonment" would only be for a day. As soon as the father accepts the fact that Corinne had four kids from her marriage with Christopher, the kids would be able to go down the house and be free. Then that changed. Corinne promised them that as soon as her father dies, they would be out of the room fast. But days, weeks, months and it took over two years before they were able to set foot on the ground again. It took them that long before they found out that their mother and grandmother were slowly poisoning them with arsenic. The planned their escape but not before Cory, one of the twins died supposedly from pneumonia that they later realized to be arsenic poisoning. Weak and slowly dying, they resolved to get out of the house even if it meant fighting off their grandmother.

They were able to get out easily, though. Set free, they planned to go to Florida and forget about the attic they left behind.

My personal thoughts: When Cathy and Chris found the book about sexual positions (I presume the book to be Kama Sutra), it is already a hint that their mother has a very different personality than the one that she showed them over the years. And the way she couldn't look at the twins when she comes visit them... the obvious disregard for their well-being... the hesitation to share with them vital information on what's happening in her life outside... Obvious giveaways that the woman is evil just like her mother.

I cried when Chris and Cathy were whipped! I cried when the twins got sick. I cried when the grandmother ignored their Christmas gift. I cried when something happened between Chris and Cathy. How can they help themselves when they were shut out from the world? They were growing teens, with rampaging hormones, especially Chris. It's bound to happen especially as they were always left alone in the attic. My heart ached for them, most especially when Cory died and Carrie was asking to go to him.

My friend told me about this V.C. Andrews novel way back in early to mid-2000, if I am not mistaken. I wasn't overly excited about the book because it wasn't really explained to me except that my friend said that it's the first story she read with an incest relationship in it. Other than that, I knew nothing anymore.

And you know what? After Forbidden, I wasn't really that much excited to read about an incestuous relationship again. But when I read the blurb from Goodreads of this Dollanganger book series, I thought I need to read this one, at least start with the first book and then move on to the next if the Flowers in the Attic will turn out to be a good one.

And let me tell you, after finishing the book a few minutes ago, I can't wait to sink my teeth into the second book of the Dollanganger kids. Flowers in the Attic is one of the best compelling stories I've read. It will leave you questioning the evil lurking in the people around us. It will leave you questioning the love a mother has for her child and if money can really wield that much control over a person that you can turn your back on your very own flesh and blood.
